A Trichologist or a Dermatologist: Who should I go to for hair loss?

Dermatology is a branch of science that deals with the skin or let’s say a skin specialist, while a trichologist deal with the hair and scalp.

A trichologist deals with all aspects of hair and scalp problems. Trichologists examine the hair and scalp to diagnose the problem and recommend an effective treatment plan. They determine the root cause of your hair loss, hair thinning, breakage and other scalp related issues that may be causing hair loss.

When a Trichologist detects the root cause of your hair loss they will take a holistic view of your lifestyle, including diet, medical history, products used as well as any medications you may be on. Once the trichologist has gained all the information necessary, they will then diagnose and recommend the best treatment plan for the patient.

Female Pattern Balding

Female pattern baldness is usually hereditary- caused by a genetically shorter hair growing period and a longer period between the shedding and growth phases.

Genes from your parents may also affect the hair, causing smaller follicles and thinner strands. However, age and hormones may play a part, too, as it is more common after menopause when estrogen levels are reduced.

Female pattern baldness usually starts at the part line, sometimes appearing all over the head. Hair at the temples will also start to recede.

There are many different treatment options to treat female pattern balding and is always best to consult with a trichologist to determine which option would be best for your individual needs.

Male Pattern Balding

Male pattern baldness, also called androgenic alopecia is the most common type of hair loss in men.

One cause of Male pattern baldness is genetics, but research has found that male pattern baldness is associated with male sex hormones called androgens. The androgens have many functions including regulating hair growth.

Each hair on your head has a growth cycle. With male pattern baldness, this growth cycle begins to weaken, and the hair follicle shrinks, producing shorter and finer hair strands. Eventually, the growth cycle for each hair ends and no new hairs grow in its place.
